I retired from Raku firing in 2016. Raku is a firing process of ceramics - open flames, smoking, live and hot propane tanks! Below are some photos of inventory I will be selling until all sold. I thought I was completely out of my handmade boxes and luckily I stored quite a few to fire at a later date - and forgot about them! I was thrilled to find boxes of "boxes" I had made in 2016 in my art storage closet. It will take me some time to glaze and fire each of them -- so I do not expect them to be available for sale until Summer, 2018. I have about 12 large boxes 25 inches high. Wish me luck.............:-)............impressive statement pieces -- but heavy. I do not ship these pieces as they are very fragile and many are very large.
The large Raku tiles take 2 months from start to finish to produce. Mounted on a 1 inch thick light-weight hollow board -- they sit 1 inch off the wall. Surprisingly these are lighter than they appear -- weighing only 15-17 lbs. each. Separate carved tiles are mounted individually and grouted in-between; a beautiful alternative to a painting. Just use two 30 lb. hanging hooks to mount on drywall or plaster -- to play it safe -- for they are fragile.
The Raku boxes take 6 weeks to complete -- no matter the size (quite complicated to build). All are slab and coil constructed, not thrown on the wheel. And, due to the uniqueness of Raku firing, all are one-of-a-kind. To learn more about the process of firing ceramics by Raku, please Google "Raku" -- a very exotic firing process invented in Japan in the 1600s. An unusual metallic effect you can only achieve in Raku as you can see by the photos below.
Prices for the tiles start at $2200. Prices for the smallest box -- $200 with large boxes $450-$650. Because the studio is small I only keep a select few Raku pieces at the studio at one time --- and as they sell, I will bring replacements from home. I've had clients ask if they can come to my home to see my inventory. My apologies -- but I'm sure you understand -- I can not do that. All Raku pieces will be sold on a 1st come, 1st serve basis from the studio only.
Luck and light and laughter to you.
